The SilverSpoon Guide to London Date Nights: A Night at the Movies

Mr S and I really love a cinema date; I’ve mentioned before that my film of choice will always be chick-flick or a rom-com whereas Mr S prefers action, adventure and hard-hitting political drama…

Well…I don’t know about you but I would definitely prefer to laugh my way through a film! Fortunately, we’ve found some middle ground as we both enjoy bad-lad comedy too like the Hangover, the Inbetweeners and American Pie…lucky there’s been so many sequels.

But actually often I think that the cinema experience is just as important as the film itself and with that in mind I thought I’d let you know about my favourite places in London for a night at the movies.

Film and Fizz at One Aldwych

One of the best cinema experiences I had in London last year was the Film and Fizz Night at One Aldwych.

Downstairs in the stunningly modern One Aldwych Hotel is a tiny private cinema with comfy blue leather armchairs and a luxurious and intimate feel. A cool glass of Lallier champagne is pressed into your hand and there are boxes of sweet or savoury popcorn for you to munch on while you enjoy your film of choice.

After enjoying the private screening of the film, we had a fab three-course meal in the hotel’s restaurant, Axis. It’s part of the package for £49.50 each!

The Electric Cinema

I love the Electric Cinema on Portobello Road, the 100 year old cinema is just gorgeous and so intimate with space for only around 80 people.

The comfy red leather armchairs with useful side tables are great, but even better are the two seater sofas at the back of the cinema or the double beds at the front. It’s just perfect for a date night and Mr Silver and I usually grab a glass of champagne from the bar at the back of the cinema and settle in on one of the sofas under a cosy cashmere blanket.

Though the bar serves substantial snacks to enjoy throughout the experience, there is also an all-day diner next door which is the perfect place to complete your cosy date night.

The Soho Hotel

Mr S and I had a very early date at the Film Club at the Soho Hotel. I’ve mentioned before that I love the eclectic style of the Firmdale Hotels, especially the gigantic cat that guards the entrance of the Soho…

We watched the film with a glass of wine in hand in the funky basement boutique cinema with it’s fab animal print chairs.

And afterwards we headed up to the refuel restaurant for a romantic dinner. There’s no membership required or anything and it’s on every Sunday accompanied by lunch, afternoon tea or dinner for £35 per person.

The Everyman

Popping to Hampstead for dinner at the Gaucho followed by a film at the Everyman used to be a regular occurrence for Mr S and I. It’s one of our favourite cinemas because you can grab one of the little booths at the side and snuggle up among the cushions.

There’s even service to your seat and you can order a delicious glass of wine or cocktail to enjoy with normal cinema food or something more substantial like pizza or an antipasti platter. My friends and I once hired out the top balcony for a screening of the first Sex and the City movie. We got dressed as our favourite character, drank Cosmos and enjoyed watching Carrie and friends in the privacy of our own area.

Or take inspiration from Caroline and hire out a private screening room for two!
