When Mr S and I thought about where we wanted to spend our first wedding anniversary, Italy was our top choice. I loved the idea of strolling along the cobbled streets eating gelato, sipping coffee in the piazza and sharing a plate of spaghetti, Lady and the Tramp style. Though other cities were on the table we eventually settled for Rome. Isn’t the Eternal city the perfect place for romance?
And I knew exactly where I wanted to stay…
As we’d had our wedding reception at The Dorchester hotel in London, I loved the idea of celebrating our first year at the Hotel Eden in Rome, which is also part of The Dorchester collection. To me, the hotels in the collection really set the standard for incredible service and overall experience at a luxury hotel. We’ve previously stayed at other hotels in the collection including The Beverley Hills Hotel, Coworth Park, 45 Park Lane, The Principe di Savoia and The Plaza Athenee all of which were just incredible.
We were staying in a junior suite which was beautifully spacious and I loved the stylish sofas, candelabra lamps and touches of marble and mahogany. There is a real feeling of old-fashioned, romantic luxury without feeling at all retro or outdated.
Doesn’t a marble bathroom just scream old-fashioned luxury to you? Actually it reminded me of the beautiful bathrooms at London’s Grand Dame, The Dorchester Hotel.
The hotel treated us to prosecco and chocolate-covered strawberries to toast our first day in Rome…and later they presented us with this…
And the next day they appealed to my blogger sensibility with this…
I absolutely loved the fact that they included the hashtag! On the last day, it was a platter of fruit to nibble on before dinner; all three gifts were really personal and demonstrated such a high level of service to me.
Downstairs is a gorgeous sweeping foyer with fresh flowers and stunning looking cakes…
The perfect place to sip on a cappucino before strolling into the ancient city.
I have to say that I thought some of the areas could do with a little sprucing and apparently some changes are on the way. Having said that, the hotel retained the classic elegant look that it has been know for since it opened in 1889. Hotel Eden has always been a hub of celebrity, and previous guests have included royalty, dignitaries and celebrities such as Tom Cruise, Robert di Niro and Meryl Streep.
Celebrity guests aside, the Hotel Eden is well-known for offering the most incredible views over Rome from the Michellin-starred restaurant La Terrazza dell’ Eden or the adjacent bar.
I’ll be reviewing the restaurant in a separate post but Bar La Terrazza is the perfect place to admire the panorama whilst sipping on a Rossini and enjoying the aperitvo before dinner.
There is also a partially open terrace, Il Giardino dell’ Eden where you can gaze at St Peter’s Dome whilst enjoying the warm Italian sun on your skin.
Breakfast can be enjoyed in the restaurant, bar or Il Giardino and we were presented with the most beautiful pastries plus the choice of a buffet or a la carte menu.
Now I don’t tend to choose a hotel based on practicality I usually base my booking around how pretty it is. But practical old Mr S likes to know that the hotel has a good location.
And Eden ticks the boxes for that too, being a short walk from the Spanish steps or the beautiful Villa Borghese.
Hotel Eden is a fantastic choice in Rome for understated classic luxury, elegance and unparalleled service. Even if you don’t stay here pop in for a drink and enjoy a room with a view!
